Some Great Food Suggestions to Take Camping

by James Bishop on November 23, 2009

What types of food items are a good fit for camping? Well, there are a variety of different choices and it is quite simply, up to you. You can either prepare foods that are time consuming or quick and easy. The best way to make the most of your trip is to plan ahead on what you will be bringing along. Make sure you account for the number of meals that you will need during the length of your trip as well as how much storage space you will have. Also, do you plan on cooking your meals over the fire or by using a camp stove?

Save some time and headaches by preparing a few meals ahead of time for your camping outing. Once you are at the campsite, you can spend less time on preparing meals and spend more time enjoying your family. For instance, a quick and convenient meal is to prepare taco-seasoned meat that can be used for “make your own” tacos or even a casserole. Casseroles, like all frozen food items can be used to help keep other food items cold in the cooler.

Pre-made soups are also easy to store and heat up rather quickly, either in the can or in a sturdy pot. On a side note, if you are going to heat up the soup in the can, make sure that you have removed all of the labels first. Canned chili and other meats such as tuna and salmon are also easy to store and prepare. If you are going to be doing quite a bit of backpacking, then you may want to choose dehydrated/freeze-dried camping food as you won’t have to keep it cold to avoid spoiling and the weight will be reduced making it easier to carry in your backpack.

Unless you enjoy camping in extreme weather conditions, avoid bringing any food items that require refrigeration. As far as frozen meats are concerned, the meat will be safe left out for the first night as long as it is frozen solid, wrapped in tin foil and tucked into towels or clothing to preserve the cold. Do not forget that protein is important when camping, especially if your family is active. Food items such as canned or dried beans, nuts, peanut butter, tuna and canned chicken are some excellent options.

Bread is a great item for sandwiches and toast; try and pick bread that has a crisper crust as this will protect it from damage during transportation. For any recipes that require milk, an excellent substitution is a package of dried milk. Your family will never know the difference! Don’t forget to pack potatoes and vegetables as they are a great side item for any meal.
